(History of Myoto (meoto) drawer)
One of Japan’s most iconic classical magic effects, the Myōto (Meoto) Drawer—also known as the Married Couple Drawer—is a masterpiece of traditional conjuring.
Its origins date back to 1848 (Kaei era), first recorded in Hijihyakusen Kōhen by Chitokusai. For over 170 years, this elegant illusion has continued to captivate audiences.
While modern variations exist, the core mystery remains unchanged—a perfect blend of simplicity, surprise, and poetic storytelling.
This rare routine has been preserved within the Kitensai school of Kansai, and passed down by master magician Maki Kitami of the Yōrō school.
With his kind permission, you can now learn and perform this authentic historical routine.
- Includes detailed explanations based on traditional handling
- Clear illustrations for easy learning
- Perform a routine preserved for nearly 200 years
(Effect)
Red and white balls mysteriously travel, vanish, and reappear…
Then—just when the audience least expects it—
The water placed inside the drawer completely vanishes…
And in its place, a long streamer suddenly appears!
A stunning, theatrical climax that leaves a lasting impression.
