I know very little about the history of this type of effect. After I purchased this I researched it online and found others who are making this sort of effect as well. I'm not sure even how old of a Tenyo item this is. What I do know and can say is this particular one works very well and looks amazing. Tenyo magic is well produced, whatever it might be. the silk is big and beautiful, the handling beyond simple and the prop works flawlessly. This is one of the reasons I'm a Tenyo collector.
